Overview

Upper Dolpo Trekking offers an unparalleled adventure in one of the most remote and untouched regions of Nepal. Situated in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, Upper Dolpo is renowned for its rugged terrain, ancient Tibetan culture, and breathtaking landscapes.

The journey begins in Kathmandu, where trekkers fly to Nepalgunj and then to Juphal, the gateway to Dolpo. From Juphal, the trail winds through picturesque villages, dense forests, and high mountain passes, offering stunning views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys.

Trekking in Upper Dolpo is not for the faint-hearted. The rugged terrain and high altitude present a challenge even to experienced by you. However, the rewards are well worth the effort. Along the way, you will encounter traditional Tibetan villages, where ancient customs and rituals are still practiced today.

One of the highlights of the trek is Phoksundo Lake a shimmering turquoise jewel set amidst the barren landscape. You can camp by the lake and soak in the tranquility of this remote wilderness.

Another must-see attraction is Shey Gompa a centuries-old monastery perched high on a hilltop. The monastery is home to a community of Buddhist monks and offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains.

As you journey deeper into Upper Dolpo, there will pass through high mountain passes such as Kang La Pass (5,360m) and Sela La Pass (5,200m), where you can witness breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas.

The trek concludes in Juphal, where you can reflect on their incredible journey and marvel at the beauty of Upper Dolpo. With its rugged terrain, ancient culture, and stunning landscapes, Upper Dolpo offers a truly unforgettable trekking experience for those willing to venture off the beaten path.
